School Safety
The following procedures are for parents and visitors:
- Students are to walk down to their classroom in the morning on their own. We discourage parents from walking them down. If a parent wishes to walk their child down for a special reason (such as: delivering a birthday treat or project, or you need to speak to the teacher), they must get a pass from the office and sign out when they leave.
- Starting at 8:40, only the front door will be unlocked. The 4K/K doors will be open until 8:40.
- Students must wait outside (weather permitting) before school starts. No students should be dropped off before 8:25. Students attending KidStop should arrive before 8:15.
- Students are not allowed to go down to their classroom before school starts unless they have special permission from their teacher.
- Any parent/visitor who comes into the building during the day and plans to leave the office must sign in and take a visitor pass. You must also sign out when you leave.
- Afternoon 4K parents should drop off their children at door 3. Please wait there until a 4K staff member greets you.
- At the end of the day, the doors will be locked until 4:00. We encourage students to dismiss from the building on their own.
- Parents and visitors who are seen in the building without a pass will be asked to report to the office to get one.
Parking Lot Procedures for Drop-off and Pick-up
Please read these carefully; failure to follow them leads to backups and unsafe conditions for our students:
- PLEASE USE THE CROSSWALK AT ALL TIMES!
- When using the drop-off lane in front of the school, please REMAIN in your car and pull to the end of the lane before you drop your child off. If the car ahead of you moves forward before your child arrives, please move your car forward as well so more cars can have access to the sidewalk.
- Students may ONLY ENTER THEIR CAR WHEN IT REACHES THE SIDEWALK!
- Please do not park in the yellow crossing area in front of the school, those should be left open at all times for students and parents to safely walk.
- Please do not park in any of the other areas marked with yellow lines, these are NOT parking spaces and are there to ensure there is adequate space for cars to drive.
- Children should not be dropped off or picked up anywhere except in front of school. Stopping anywhere else in the lot without parking in a designated spot causes backups and is not safe for our children.
- If you do not have a handicap sticker please do not park in the handicap spots for ANY reason, even if your child is waiting out front and you only need to park for a minute. We have several families that NEED those spots.
- Talk to your child about waiting on the sidewalk and NOT running after your car.
- Please slow down and watch carefully for children, we have had some close calls due to inattentive or fast driving.
- Please do not pull forward out of the first row of parking spots. Pulling forward means you will be crossing the walking area (yellow-lined area).
- Remember that if you are going to get out of your car and talk to your child’s teacher or stop in the office, please park in one of the parking stalls rather than using the drop-off lane. The drop-off lane needs to keep moving, so you should remain in your car.
- If you are picking your child up on a motorcycle, I would encourage you to park in the lot, as the noise from a motorcycle taking off can be scary to our young children and make it difficult to hear.
- Please follow all posted signs in the parking lot and on the roads surrounding Lincoln-Erdman.
- There is NO SMOKING allowed in the parking lot.
- There are no animals allowed on school grounds, with the exception of service animals. Please keep animals in your vehicle during pick up and drop off.
- Do not cut across the sidewalk from the parking lot to the bus lane during times when students are present.

Assessment
The following assessments are utilized in our school/district to assess your child’s present level of performance:
- STAR-math and reading or early literacy tests that provide teachers with learning data. STAR tests are computer adaptive, which means they adjust to each answer your child provides (grades 4K-5).
- AIMSweb-ACT 20 required literacy screening (grades 4K-3)
- Forward Exam-Gauges how well students are doing in relation to the Wisconsin Academic Standards (grades 3-5).
- B.e.s.t.-is an online screening platform for educators to help identify and match b.e.s.t practices for externalizing and internalizing behaviors in school-age children. Parents do have an option to opt-out of this assessment (grades 4K-5)
Attendance and Absences
Schools are obligated by State Statute and supported by school board policies to maintain attendance records. They must also determine if each absence is excused or unexcused and share attendance records with the state each spring. We want to work with families to ensure your child is at school each day.
Per the Department of Instruction -- Wisconsin Public Schools share responsibility with families and guardians to ensure school-age children are enrolled in and attending appropriate educational programs. Good attendance in the early years also predicts good attendance rates throughout a student’s K-12 education. Data reveals that repeated early absence has negative educational implications for children. Getting all students to create good attendance habits from the start is key to increasing the number of students who graduate from school ready for college and careers. Attendance habits that are established by the second grade can have lifelong effects on our children and their chance for success, but improving attendance rates at any point -- in any grade -- has positive outcomes for students and schools.
Per Wisconsin State Statute 118.15 -- any child who is enrolled in a public school 5 year-old kindergarten program or is between the age of 6 and 18 must attend school regularly. A habitual truant is a student absent from school without an acceptable excuse for part or all of 5 or more days on which school is held during a semester. The only excused absences are for illness, medical appointments, family emergencies (death or serious illness of immediate family member), or religious holiday. A school administrator may require a medical excuse if the number of parental excused absences is deemed excessive or totals 10 or more of the total number of school days in any given period of time. If a written medical excuse is not received, the school administration may consider the absence unexcused.
The staff at Lincoln-Erdman wants to work with parents to remove the barriers of getting your child to school and on time. Our bottom line is that your child is missing out on valuable instruction that builds upon itself each day and that is why attendance matters to us. We will follow the board policy and make frequent contact with you via mailed, written communication at the:
5th, 10th and 15th Tardy
5th, 7th, 10th, 15th Excused Absence
3rd, 5th and 10th Unexcused Absence
Additional phone contact, conferences and home visits will be utilized to assist in the development of a plan to assist families in getting their child to school. The school guidance counselor, school nurse, classroom teacher, and the principal may be involved in these conversations to help families that are in need of assistance.
To help us maintain accurate records and to ensure your child's absence will be properly excused, please call school by 9 am at 920-459-3595 when they will be absent. Leave a message on the answering machine if it is outside of school hours. You may make requests for homework at that time. Excused school absences include illness, religious holidays, death in the family, medical emergency, and extended absences arranged in and approved by the school principal.
If students are home ill or quarantined, work completion or checking in with the teacher will determine their attendance. If a student is absent for an extended period of time due to COVID exposure, their teacher may provide work for them.
A child is considered tardy if they are not in their seat by 8:45 AM. Children arriving at school late must stop in the office.
After arriving at school, students are not permitted to leave school without written permission or a phone call from the parent. A parent may pick up their child from the office if needed outside of regular dismissal time.
Students planning extended absences because of vacation or other reasons should have parents notify the office and the classroom teacher.
Breakfast
Breakfast is available Monday-Friday (when school is in session) from 8:35-9:00 am in the classroom. Breakfast is free to all students.
Bus
SASD provides yellow school bus transportation to students that live within the Lincoln-Erdman boundaries. In the spring and again in August, parents will receive a survey to indicate their need for bussing. For the safety of themselves and others, it is important that students observe the bus rules. Face masks will be required to be worn for all riders on the yellow school bus. Parents are encouraged to review safe bus conduct with students and to contact school officials or Prigge’s about any problems with school bus transportation. Home/school cooperation is important in providing safe, efficient transportation for all students.
Child Care/KidStop
The Sheboygan Recreation Department offers before and after school care. If you are interested in this service, please contact them at 459-3773
Celebrations and Special Occasions
We know that celebrating special occasions can be a lot of fun for many of our students! However, it is important that parents coordinate any special plans pertaining to birthdays or any other special occasion. Teachers may use their own discretion when planning the celebration so that it does not interfere with learning. We discourage sending or bringing balloons, stuffed animals, or any other items that could potentially distract other students. Only store-bought treats (including items from a bakery) will be allowed.
We also know that not all students celebrate special occasions or holidays. We ask that this be communicated with classroom teachers so we can respect each family’s beliefs, cultures, and/or backgrounds. Additionally, please communicate with your child’s teacher if you are sending birthday invitations to school with your child, especially if you are not inviting the entire class.
Communication
Our parent newsletter, Lincoln-Erdman News, containing items of interest to parents, will be sent out monthly via School Messenger email or text message as well as posted on Facebook. It will also be posted on our school website. Please read it carefully each month as it contains important school information. If you need a paper copy, please contact your child’s teacher or the principal.
Our automated Skylert system will send out phone, email, and text messages regularly with important information. Please manage these communications in Skyward Parent Access. You may also add other caregivers to this messaging system so they know about important events.
We also have a Lincoln-Erdman Facebook Account.
Dangerous Weapons Policy
No person may possess, be armed with, use, or store a dangerous weapon on any school property, on any bus, or at any school-related activity. Dangerous weapons are defined as any object that is capable of inflicting bodily harm or property damage, specifically such things as guns, knives, screwdrivers, metal knuckles and others.
Students violating this policy will be referred to the police, suspended for up to 5 days and may be referred to the Board of Education with a recommendation for expulsion from the district.
The District Rights and Responsibility Handbook also covers threats to, or false information regarding attempts to destroy school property by means of explosives.
Dress Code
All students must be dressed in clothing for school that they can be active in and learn comfortably without distractions. If a student is in violation of the dress code, parents will be contacted and expected to bring a change of clothes for the student. The dress code is as follows:
- Clothing that students can paint, draw, play, or rest in
- Comfortable shoes students can run, jump, skip, and walk in safely. For safety, we discourage students from wearing flip-flops or high heels. Athletic shoes that students can put on and remove themselves are strongly recommended
- Images or language on clothing must refrain from contributing to a hostile or intimidating school environment. This means that graphics may not include any profanity or references to violence, drug or alcohol abuse, or an attack of any gender, sexual orientation, race, ethnicity, religion, or community group.
- Each student expected to bring a button down or old T-shirt for art class that you wouldn’t mind getting dirty
NOTE: All children should have a complete change of clean, dry clothes (shirt, pants, underwear, and socks) in their lockers in case of emergencies. When a clothing item is used, please replace it in the locker the next day.
Emergency Drills
Per law, one fire drill (or another emergency drill) occurs each month unless there is inclement weather. In the fall, we do an A.L.I.C.E. drill (see below). A tornado drill typically occurs during the spring.
The Sheboygan Area School District’s number one priority is providing a safe environment for education. Over the past several years, we have seen a dramatic increase in school violence and school shootings across the country. Through a partnership between the Sheboygan Police Department and the Sheboygan Area School District (SASD), our SASD staff members have been trained on the strategy for lockdown procedures, known as the ALICE (Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter, Evacuate) plan.
As we do with fire and tornado drills, our staff will inform students about the ALICE drill procedures in an appropriate context and students will participate in age-appropriate drills. These drills provide students the ability to practice the components of the ALICE model. They will include a simulation of an intruder, not an actual person pretending to be an intruder. Here at Pigeon River, after the students have had several Guidance lessons on ALICE and being safe in school through a curriculum designed for this purpose that they understand and is very child-friendly, we will run a practice drill in the fall.
A.L.I.C.E. is an acronym for Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter and Evacuate. Alert is to use plain, clear language to convey to everyone the type of event and location of the event. Lockdown is an enhanced lockdown where students are held in a secure area and the door is barricaded shut and windows are covered. Inform is a step in which real-time information is shared with staff and students as often as possible so they can make life saving decisions, know what is happening, and also keep the shooter off balance. Counter is applying skills to distract, confuse or gain control in a life or death situation to enhance your chances of survival. Evacuate is allowing the students and staff to leave the danger area by running to the schools’ designated rally points. These steps are not sequential--our training presents all the possible ways to respond in the event of an intruder with evacuation being used at any point when safe to do so, given the information provided.
Although the likelihood of a violent incident happening at one of our schools is very small, it’s our responsibility to make sure that our students and staff are given the tools to react appropriately. While important in schools, being equipped to react in a violent or threatening situation is a life skill that is applicable in any location in our community.
On occasion, calls are made over the loudspeaker to initiate safety protocol not related to a fire, tornado or intruder. Those calls, often referred to as a Lock & Hold are made to clear the hallways of student and staff so that a situation can be handled. Those situations may include a medical emergency or a student being unsafe (not in danger to others).
Field Trips
Field trips are an important part of learning, which helps children apply what they have been taught in the classroom. Students learn more about the community in which they live in by extending classroom learning. We expect the same behavior out of school as we do in school. Students who repeatedly have issues meeting behavioral expectations may lose the privilege of attending future trips. Parents are notified when field trips are scheduled and must provide written permission for a child to attend field trips.
Friday Folders
Each Friday, students will bring home a folder with school and community communications. Please make sure you check this folder, read the information, and return the folder the following Monday. If more than one folder is necessary be sure to make your child’s teacher aware.
Gang Policy
Gang behavior will not be tolerated at Lincoln-Erdman Elementary School. Any student involved in gang activity, such as wearing gang clothing, recruitment, using gang symbols, graffiti, or gestures will be dealt with by the principal through the disciplinary policy. Parents will be notified and the student could be referred to local law enforcement.
Illness or Injury
In case of illness or injury a child will be cared for temporarily by the school secretary, school nurse or other staff members. School personnel will render first aid treatment only. Incidents are documented and a report is sent home with the child when applicable. If emergency medical treatment is necessary the parents will be contacted. If parents are not available the child will be taken to the emergency room at the hospital listed in Skyward. Remember it is important to have multiple emergency contact numbers on file and make sure all contacts are up-to-date.
Lost and Found
Lost items are kept in the hallway outside the office or outside the cafeteria. Please check the lost and found periodically for personal items. It is suggested that personal items be labeled with the student’s name.
Medication
We understand children may need to take medication during the school day. To ensure the safety of all of our students, the District has written policies in giving medicine.
These policies require:
- Prescription medication to be administered contains;
- Medication needs to be in the original container from the pharmacy. This must contain the doctor's name, name of prescription, dose to be administered, and time(s) of administration, and name of pharmacy.
- Completion of the Sheboygan County Medication Authorization Form.
- The physician’s directions for administering the medication must accompany the medication if their directions deviate from the directions on the medication container.
- Medication will be taken by the student at designated time supervised by trained and authorized personnel.
- The parents agree to notify the school when the drug is to be discontinued and/or the dosage or time is to be changed. If the medication is resumed, a new order must be received.
- The school maintains an accurate and confidential record-keeping system for each student receiving medication, which is maintained in Skyward that parents/guardians can access.
- For over-the-counter medications (such as Tylenol, cough medicine, etc) only parents need to complete and sign a Sheboygan County Student Medication Authorization Form (top section only) before school personnel can administer the medication.
New prescriptions must be received annually for students on yearly medication. Medication forms must be signed annually. Medications shall be stored in the office’s locked cabinet in its original container. Any unused medication will be returned to the parent or guardian at the end of the school year.
Mobile Devices
Students enrolled in the SASD shall be permitted to possess and use mobile devices (including but not limited to cellular phones) in accordance with the following guidelines:
Mobile devices may not be used during the instructional day except with permission of the administration. The instructional day is defined as being from the official start of the school day to the official end of the school day.
- During the instructional day as defined above, specific uses of mobile devices will be determined by the building administration.
- Usage of mobile devices during non-instructional times that is considered disruptive to the school environment and management of the school as determined by the administration, may result in a termination of this privilege.
Non-Custodial Parents
Non-custodial parents shall have the same access to student’s educational records as the custodial parent, unless they have been denied visitation rights, per the Wisconsin Family Code and the school has been provided with the proper documentation or a court order denying parental rights due to a divorce or separation. The rights cited in this paragraph shall not imply that the non-custodial parent has rights in participating in the educational decisions. Those rights depend on the language of the court decree awarding care, custody, and education of the children. Parents must give written permissions for the school to share information with anyone besides the actual parent(s). These forms are available in the office.
PBIS
PBIS stands for Positive Behavior Intervention Supports. This is an evidence-based program that helps improve school climate and culture. Lincoln-Erdman is one of many schools in the district that utilizes this program. The program reinforces responsible, respectful, and safe behaviors. A primary goal of PBIS is to improve academic and social outcomes and increase learning for all students. If a student does not follow our PBIS expectations, they may be written an Office Discipline Referal (ODR). ODRs are sent home and entered into Skyward for parents to review. If a major is written, a communication from the principal may occur to further discuss the incident.
Report Cards/Progress Reports/Conferences
Your child will receive a report card four times a year showing their progress in school. Report cards will be posted to Skyward approximately 1 week after the conclusion of the quarter. To view report cards, log-in to Skyward FamilyAccess by clicking on the Skyward Family Access link in the upper right corner of the district homepage at www.sheboygan.k12.wi.us. Click on Portfolio in the left side menu. This will display report cards for all students. To locate an I-6 Progress Report, click on Student Services in the left menu. Click on Display Options. Choose View IEP from the correct date. Scroll down to view the I-6 Form.
Parents will be invited to conferences twice per year. 15-minute conferences are scheduled through Skyward Family Access. Additional conferences may be scheduled throughout the year. Parent conferences are designed to provide:
- an update of your child's academic and social development
- a mutual discussion of the child's strengths and areas for growth
- a chance to cooperatively develop plans
School Closing
If a decision is made to delay, cancel or release school early due to weather conditions, the Sheboygan Area School District will post or share information in the following ways:
- Post an announcement on the SASD website (red banner that displays on every page) www.sheboygan.k12.wi.us
- Share with the following TV stations-WBAY TV 2, WTMJ TV 4, WFRV TV 5 and WITI TV 6
- Share with the following radio stations-WXER 104.5 FM, WHBL 1330 AM, WJUB 1420 AM and WLKN 98.1 FM
- Send an all-district email to SASD staff members
- Record an automated message at 803-SNOW (7669)
- Post on the Sheboygan Area School District facebook page
- Post on the Sheboygan Area School District twitter page for news and announcements
- Send a School Messenger to the families
Teacher Requests
Lincoln-Erdman is one of few schools within the Sheboygan Area School District that allows parents the opportunity to request the teacher that they would like their child to have for the school year. This process is done via a Google Form that is sent out mid-April. This is the only way that requests can be made. While it can not guarantee that all requests will be honored, we do our best to try to accommodate all requests. Teacher Request Google Forms will be sent out via email and text message and can also be found on our school website and our Facebook page during the time that requests can be made (mid-April through mid-May).
Technology
All students in grades K-5 will have a device (iPad or Chromebook) and a charger assigned to them. In the event that we move to virtual instruction, that device will go home with students. Teachers will be reviewing how to use the device with students during the first few weeks of school.
Telephone Calls
We have students call home if they have forgotten their school work, technology device, or lunch. Children may not use the phone to ask parents to go to a friend’s house after school-please make these arrangements before the school day. Make sure your child knows who will pick them up after school before the start of school in the morning. If the plan is different than normal please contact the office at 920-459-3595. If you feel it necessary for your child to carry a cell phone, it must be turned off before entering the school and not turned on until the dismissal bell rings. NOTE: We are not responsible for lost or stolen cell phones. If you need to get a message to your child, the office can do that for you. Teachers do not receive phone calls during instructional hours.
Visitors
Visitors should enter through door #1 and check-in directly in the office to receive a visitor tag. Visits with a specific staff member should be prearranged with them.
For early pickups, parents should check into the office and remain there until their child’s classroom teacher is contacted. The child will meet their parent(s) in the office after they pick up all of their belongings for the day.
We no longer allow visitors to eat in the lunchroom with our students. If you want to visit during lunch, it must be done in the teacher’s classroom or in the office. This should be arranged with the teacher in advance.
Water Bottles
If you wish, you may choose to send a water bottle to school for your child. Refills at our water bottle fill stations will be arranged via the classroom teacher’s implemented routines.
